- More likely it is the phone lines. However, specifying a number lower
- than 128 for the S191 in that modem allows lower line quality for the same
- receive speed, but if you change this value too much, you'll get lots of
- errors and it'll end up slowing you down. Try removing devices on the
- same line as the modem to improve line quality, and if you have your data
- and voice lines as separate lines, but out of a single 4-wire jack, change
- this - get one of the wall plates with two phone jacks in it. There is a
- lot of crosstalk when the lines come to a single 4-wire plug. Also, if
- the wiring running through your house is flat cables, instead of twisted,
- you'll lose enough quality due to cross talk between the lines to make a
- 2400 or so difference there. If the quality loss is from the phone
- company's lines, not the local wiring, then there is probably nothing you
- can do about it. Send a "+++" and then a "AT%Q1" while you are connected
- and see what it reports about line quality.
